I’m so excited! Anyone who’s anyone is making an enamel lapel pin these days, and I have had so many ideas in my head for fabulous pins, and our first one is becoming a reality!
This pin will be .75″ high and 1.25″ wide, it’s in our favorite colors and it has one of our favorite phrases!
“Feel Free to Compliment Me!”
That’s right! You can let everyone know that you’re ready to receive a compliment, at any time, when you pin this beauty on your lapel or your bag.
What’s this phrase all about?
Long ago- I mean 2008 or something like that- Linda B was teaching a lock-in class late into the night. Some of the best people were there- Linda B, Mom, myself, and most importantly, Gina. We were making slice and dice quilt blocks, and Gina called Linda over to ask her a question. I overheard their conversation, or thought I had, and Gina very assuredly told Linda, “Feel free to compliment me, at any time!”
I looked over at Gina in sheer awe. Damn straight! We should all encourage our peers and teachers to compliment us more often- I guess! I spoke up and made some remark about Gina’s huge supply of confidence and I think I repeated the line “Feel free to compliment me!” Everyone laughed. We roared. It was a fabulous moment of sewing sisterhood that I won’t forget.
Then Gina clarified, and said that she had actually told Linda B to “Feel free to correct me, at any time!”. We roared again.
I had completely misheard the conversation (that’s why you should drink when you sew with friends), and we got the funniest, longest running joke in shop history from this moment near midnight.
I’m glad I misheard, and I think we should all be more open to compliments- encourage them even. You work hard on what you sew, so I think a healthy serving of pride along with your sweat, blood, and tears is completely appropriate. In fact, I don’t think that we always get the credit we deserve as stitchers.
So, this pin symbolizes both a longstanding tradition of pride in our work and the entry into new territory- like enamel pins and online classes.
